Grievances
Grievances are concerns, problems or complaints that employees raise with employers. Even in a well run business you will have to deal with some form of grievance on occasion. It is imperative that you consider a grievance procedure for your business to assist you in handling grievances quickly, fairly and in-house.
There is no stringent process that you can follow but you should have a procedure that is drafted in accordance with the ACAS Code of Practice. You must inform every employee of the name of the person that a grievance should be addressed to, how they can make their application and every employee should have easy access to your procedure. If you fail to have an adequate procedure or indeed follow it this will result in extra compensation for the employee if the matter escalates to a tribunal claim.
The most efficient way to address this is to have a well drafted grievance policy that deals with all eventualities in a fair and reasonable manner. This will ensure that, not only can you resolve many grievances at source but in the event that you are unable to do so you will be able to successfully prove to an Employment Tribunal that your actions were reasonable.
